The year-round sun and warmth of Florida and the beautiful historic 30A are not to be missed. Beach and water sports are a part of the culture, and that includes fishing. There are several 30A fishing spots you’ll want to cast a line in search of your next big fish story. You can join a charter boat, or head out on your own. Before you head out, make sure to secure the proper Florida fishing license.

Dune Lakes

You came to 30A for the beach and crashing waves of the Gulf of Mexico, as well as to explore some of its other 30A fishing hot spots. This includes the unique coastal dune lakes. Created with a blend of salt and freshwater sources, it’s a unique place to cast a line. Anglers can expect to hook largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, striped mullet, Gulf killifish, red drum, Gulf flounder, gray snapper, and a myriad of others. You’ll need to secure a combination freshwater/saltwater Florida fishing license before casting a line!

Stay Inshore

If you’re not yet looking for the excitement of deep-sea fishing but want to cast a line further than from the surf or a pier, inshore fishing is a good place to start. Fish the waters of the Intracoastal Waterway, Choctawhatchee Bay, Santa Rosa Sound, and the Gulf of Mexico. You’ll stay close to land and experience calmer waters, great for a beginning angler or someone who wants a slower pace. Your catch of the day may include redfish, speckled trout, white trout, flounder, sheepshead, bluefish, or ladyfish. Head out to the many fly fishing spots in the area, including flats, inlets, feeder creeks, bayous, and more in search of redfish, tarpon, speckled trout, Spanish mackerel, pompano and crevalle jack.

Surf Fishing

Feel the lap of the waves of the Gulf of Mexico on your feet or splash out even further into the surf. This type of 30A fishing gets you out into the waves of the Gulf while also staying close to shore. Stand at the shoreline or brave the water and cast a line to see what’s biting. If you’re a veteran of the activity, you can bring your own gear, but there are several companies in the area that will rent everything you need, from heavy-duty rod and reel combos to bait, tackle, and even a bucket to store everything in.

Pier Fishing

Locals know where all the best places to cast a line are, and knowing the best pier is no exception. Many will recommend checking out the CR395 dock at the Tucker Bayou stream. It’s considered one of the top 30A fishing piers, where you’ll hook impressive black and red drum. Thomas Plicher Park in Rosemary Beach hosts a 380-foot fishing pier, plus fishing platforms. There are several other piers in the area where you can cast a line, just ask a local for their favorite!

Destin Pass & Jetties

The Destin Pass is a deep and frequently “dredged” channel that provides access between the Gulf of Mexico and the inner Choctawhatchee Bay. The area is considered a “highway” and gathering point for many species. The jetty walls on either side of the channel not only serve to keep the movement of sand water causing the eventual filling-in of the channel. Near the jetty walls, you’ll cast a line to find redfish, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, and many others.

Bonus Entry: Deep Sea Fishing

Many anglers who visit the beach towns of 30A are eager to get out on the high seas of the Gulf of Mexico. After a relaxing time fishing from piers, jetties, and other inland areas, take the adventure out onto the waves and deep waters. Many of the companies that offer boating and fishing charters include a deep-sea option. Not only will you reel in some different catches than those you hook closer to shore, but there’s also the night adventure of shark fishing if you dare! Contact your company of choice for more information on what’s included in a deep-sea fishing package, such as bait, tackle, or the proper fishing license.
