Escape to the year-round sun and warmth with a visit to Florida and plan plenty of beach time, hiking, biking, and other time in the sun. Slow down and spend some time getting to know the outdoor environment of Southwest Florida with a visit to Topsail Hill Preserve State Park. The 3.2-mile beach is named for its ship’s topsail-shaped dunes, feature white sand and dunes rising 25 feet. The preserve is located at 7525 West County Highway 30A, one mile off U.S. 98 in Santa Rosa Beach. The beach is open 8 a.m. to sundown, 365 days a year. The contact phone number is 850-267-8330. Entry is $6/vehicle of 2-8 people, with an additional $2/person for any additional passengers; $4/single-occupant vehicle or motorcycle with one or more riders; $2/pedestrians, bicyclists, and passengers in Annual Individual Entrance Pass vehicles.
Coastal Dune Lakes
Florida is one of just two states in the U.S. and five total places around the world where coastal dunes are a natural geographic feature. Dune lakes are typically shallow, irregularly shaped permanent bodies of water that are brackish and dark-colored due to the mix of both salt and freshwater sources. Rent a kayak, canoe, or paddleboard for some fun on the water, purchase a combo freshwater/saltwater fishing license, or just relax and enjoy the day on the shoreline.
Land Activities
Hike on over 15 miles of marked trails or take part in a geocaching adventure. Bike, walk, or run for some fast-paced exercise. The preserve is a great place for wildlife viewing and birding, and picnicking after a day of activity. The ranger station offers a myriad of programs, events, and tours as well.
Wildlife
There are several species of wildlife that call the preserve and its lands home. You’ll spot an array of birds, including red-shouldered hawks, ospreys, and others, as well as various reptiles and mammals.
Rentals
If you didn’t come completely prepared, there are rentals available for your ultimate Topsail Hill Preserve State Park experience. Stand up paddleboards, double kayaks, and canoes can be rented for a tranquil day on the water. Bikes for children and adults, as well as beach and fishing carts provide a little exercise on your day at the Topsail State Park, and lounging equipment like beach umbrellas, chairs, and food service setups make for an unforgettable day!
